FAQs

What is Kirky Klub?

Kirky Klub is a free, monthly family-friendly social event in Kirknewton, West Lothian. It is run by parents, for parents. The Village Hall will be transformed with a Stay & Play area, Cuppa and Cake café-style area, and a Preloved items area. We hope it provides a relaxed space for neighbours and parents to mingle, children to play together, and an opportunity to find new homes for preloved items.

When is Kirky Klub?

Kirky Klub will be launched Saturday 15 November 2025, 10.30 am to 12.00 pm. The first 20 children to attend get a goodie bag! After the launch Kirky Klub will be held the 1st Saturday of every month, 10.30 am - 12.00 pm, with occasional different dates (e.g. due to school holidays) which will be communicated on this webpage, in the community newsletter the Kirky Kourier, and on the Kirknewton Community Facebook page.

Can I leave my child at Kirky Klub while they play?

No, unfortunately we are not able to accommodate any child supervision. All children need to be supervised by their responsible adult. We provide a café-style corner with hot drinks and homebaking to relax and chat with a clear view of the play areas.

Who runs Kirky Klub?

Kirky Klub is run by parents for parents. At the moment Dani, Gab, and Claire are the driving forces, with support from Gill, Ailsa (KCDT), and Graeme (KCDT). You can contact us at kirky.krew@protonmail.com

What is ‘Stay & Play’?

For the Stay & Play we have lots of activities for supervised little ones. For example:

  • Baby area

  • Book corner

  • Crafts corner

  • Toy kitchen

  • Lego

  • Puzzles

  • Games

  • Outdoor area

  • And lots more!

What is ‘Cuppa & Cake’?

We have a Cuppa & Cake café-style corner with hot drinks, cake, soft drinks, and kids’ snacks. There are tables and seating, and there is also outdoor seating.

What is the ‘Preloved items’ area?

We wanted to provide a space for preloved items to find a new home, especially for children’s items (they grow so quickly!). Anyone can bring pre-loved items they do not need anymore. Others can browse the preloved items and take home what they need by swapping (in other words, you brought one item and take one item) or ‘pay-what-you-can’ as a donation to the group (see ‘Why do you need donations?’).

At the end of the session you are of course free to take home again any items you brought along. Any items left behind will be either used by the group (e.g. toys and books) or donated to Reuse and Thrive (preloved community shop in East Calder), the clothing rack at Tots Spot (play cafe in East Calder), the library, the KidzEco in Livingston, etc.

Accepted items are at the discretion of the organisers: items need to be in relatively good shape, there needs to be space to display, and adhere to the following rules:

Items we accept:

  • Baby, children’s and adult clothes

  • Accessories (fashion, home, children)

  • Toys, games, puzzles

  • Books

  • Craft items

  • Nappies (cloth and disposable)

  • Kitchen items

Items we do not accept:

  • Electronics incl. CDs and DVDs

  • Toiletries, food, vitamins

  • Used plastic items for food and feeding (tubs, bottles, teats, breast pumps, etc.)

  • Very large items, meaning items that cannot be easily carried away

  • Car seats

Why do you need donations?

Kirky Klub is free and everyone is welcome to come along. We do welcome donations (both cash and card) to help run the group, e.g. to purchase refreshments. In kind donations, such as toys, are also welcome! Donations will be held by the organisers of the group. For full transparency, you can find a table with income and expenses at the end of this page, and receipts can always be requested from us. When donations become too large to manage, we will do a one-time donation to KCDT.

How can I help?

You can help this group by:

  • Coming along! The more the merrier.

  • Donating.

  • Helping us set up (from 10 am onwards) or helping us tidy up afterwards (from 12.00 pm onwards).

  • Home baking for the Cuppa & Cake café corner. Please no nuts and bring the ingredient list so people can check for allergens.

  • Tell your friends! Spread the word.

How do I get there?

The Kirknewton Village Hall is located on the main street. You can get to Kirknewton by bus (X28 - which stops right in front of the hall) and by train (train station is about a 15 min walk to the village hall). Also the national cycle route 75 runs through the village (there are no dedicated bike racks, but there is a fence between the road and sidewalk to lock your bike to). There is limited parking in Kirknewton, so please consider alternatives to driving. If you are driving, please be considerate to residents when parking around the village (i.e. do not block driveways or use private parking areas).
