Getting involved in Kirknewton
Lots of people are involved in community building in Kirknewton - and you can join!
The Kirknewton Community Developmen Trust (or 'KCDT' or 'Trust') is a member-led charity that aims to improve the lives of everyone in Kirknewton. The trust was founded with a settlement of a court case, and has since invested in the community in various ways. The KCDT is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors and employs staff from the local community. You can engage with us by becoming a member (it's free! you get a newsletter!), volunteering for various activities, and - if you're really keen - stand for election for the Board. Read more...
The Kirknewton Community Council (or 'KCC' or 'Council') is an elected body to represent the Kirknewton residents at West Lothian Council. The volunteer Council Members hold an open meeting each month where they discuss local matters. You can get involved by joining the monthly meetings and sharing your views or by getting elected Council Member. Elections are held every 4 years, and the Council also accept Youth Members (14-16 years). The Trust and the Council work closely together. Read more...
The KCDT has various sub-committees, including the Gala Committee, Muddy Boots, and the Kirknewton Community Football Club. The Gala Committee organises fantastic fundraising activities throughout the year and plans the annual Kirknewton Gala – a week of festivities in the village each summer. Muddy Boots is a community gardening group which takes care of various green spaces around the village. Kirknewton CFC is an amateur football team with the Park and the Pavilion as home base, playing regular matches.
If you want to start your own community group, or have a good idea for a community activity, you can apply for some community funding. There are many more informal community groups that meet regularly in the Village. Examples include the playgroup Kirky Klub, happening every first Saturday of the month in the Village Hall, and the Craft & Chat group that meets every Monday in the Green Room.
The village boasts various community facilities, notably our Village Hall, the Green Room, and the Pavilion. These facilities are important for the many activities that are organised by and for the village. Furthermore, the KCDT recently delivered seven houses for our senior residents, creating a completely new street: Jencks View.
